ALDI is to sell a new brand of stout – and some beer lovers believe it’s “even better” than Guinness.
The cans will be on sale in the budget store at a bargain price in just days.
Aldi’s Mulligan’s Stout will hit shelves nationwide on September 8.
The cut-price stout will arrive in shops just weeks after Guinness maker Diageo announced it was ramping up cost-cutting after a tough year of plunging profits.
The marketing team at Aldi behind the new brew said with its “deep black pour, creamy head and notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and sweet toffee, Mulligan’s delivers a delicious stout”.
Fan reviews
In a statement, a spokesperson added: “Whether perfecting the ‘split the M’’ or hosting friends, it looks and tastes the part, for less than a familiar alternative…”
Aldi took to the streets of the UK to test Mulligan’s – and found it came out ahead of the “famous black stuff“.
In a series of online reviews, beer lovers heaped praise on the new brew.
One person said: “That’s fantastic, what a beer. It’s rich, it’s creamy, good mouth feel, roasted Malt coming through.
“For me, the Mulligan’s wins.”
They added: “The Aldi beer is beautiful.”
Others were quick to add their thoughts on the supermarket offering.
One tester describe it as “so much better than Guinness, delicious thanks”.
Another taster said they “definitely preferred it over canned Guinness”.
Aldi is well known for introducing cheaper alternatives to popular brands.
The budget store is also launching a specially selected Chocolate Stout (£1.79, 500ml).
The store describes it as “a decadent brew with indulgent cocoa notes, balanced by roasted malt – just in time for cosy autumn nights”.
It comes after the brand’s coffee stout was crowned “Best in the Country” at the World Beer Awards this year.
Award-winning brew
The spokesperson said the “rich, dark, and indulgent stout … is already making it a crowd favourite”.
Mulligan’s Stout will come in a pack of four 440ml cans, priced £4.99.
The cut-price stout arrives in shops just weeks after Guinness maker Diageo announced its cost-cutting measure.
Diageo, which also owns brands including Gordon’s and Johnnie Walker whisky, said operating profits had fallen by 27.8 per cent to £3.3billion in the year to June 30, 2025/.
In response, the spirits giant plans to cut costs by £625million over three years, increasing its original target of £500million.
It’s a tough job, but …
Our Features Writer Thea Jacobs tested some alternatives to Guinness and ranked them out of five. Here’s what she discovered ….
- BrewDog Black Heart 4.1 per cent, Tesco, £5.50 (4 x 440ml cans) – 2/5
This isn’t as carbonated as some of the others, and certainly not as fine.
But that being the case, I have no idea what it is doing.
The head is lacklustre, at best. It’s not so much creamy as semi-skimmed.
BrewDog says it has an in-can widget, just like Guinness.
- Dark Arts Surreal Stout 6 per cent, Waitrose, £3.15 (per 440ml can) – 4/5
I can instantly tell this is a lively brew, given that it almost bursts from the tin as I open it.
It pours out nicely and has a really good head on it.
- Hobgoblin Stout 4.1 per cent, Morrisons, £2.25 (per 500ml bottle) – 1/5
While this stout looks good once poured out – with a decent head – it is very forgettable.
It is easy to knock back because it lacks flavour.
