Limited edition Cuthbert cake launches today

The brand new version of the beloved cake celebrates most babies being born in September.

Featuring either blue or pink icing, the budget supermarket’s latest offering is a “gender reveal” Cuthbert cake.

This new take on the popular chocolate treat is designed to offer expectant parents the ultimate way to reveal the gender of their child.

Aldi is launching the exciting new product today, via an exclusive shopper competition.

The cake will also be completely free for those lucky enough to get their hands on it.

The limited edition Cuthbert is decorated with pink and blue chocolate beans.

It will only be once the parents have sliced into the cake that the filling inside will reveal their baby’s gender.

The filling options are either pink or blue buttercream icing.

How to get your hands on the treat

To be in with a chance of winning, shoppers must send an email to [email protected].

The message must include your full name, why you believe you are an ideal recipient of the cake, the address of your nearest Aldi store, and, of course, the gender of your baby.

The competition opens today and is available to enter until September 14.

Once more, it is completely free to enter.

The lucky winners will be contacted via email by September 28.

Further competition details, as well as terms and conditions, can be found on Aldi’s website.

Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, Julie Ashfield, said: “We know how special gender reveal moments can be for expectant parents, so we wanted to offer something fun for shoppers to help mark the occasion.

“And what better way to do it than by transforming our popular Cuthbert Cake!”

Rise in gender reveal parties

This comes after Aldi’s research revealed that two thirds of millennials choose to host gender reveal parties, with some forking out over £150 on the cake alone.

Also, nearly half of Gen Z have attended an average of three gender reveal celebrations in the last five years.

It was also revealed that cake is the most popular method of revealing a baby’s gender.

The survey showed that 42% of parents-to-be spend anything between £100 and £500 on the occasion.

Colin the Caterpillar vs Cuthbert the Caterpillar

MARKS & Spencer has called a truce with Aldi over Colin the Caterpillar cake.

The posh supermarket and discount chain were locked in a legal battle after Aldi started selling a cake called Cuthbert the Caterpillar which looked similar to the M&S creation.

They reached a confidential agreement out of court on November 5, it has now emerged.

The companies have not disclosed the terms of the settlement – but both cakes will still be sold.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Cuthbert is free and looking forward to seeing all his fans again very soon!”

An M&S spokesperson said: “The objective of the claim was to protect the IP in our Colin the Caterpillar cake and we are very pleased with the outcome.”

The high street retailer started selling the famous Colin cake more than 30 years ago and its design has been largely unchanged since 2004.

The only exception is during seasonal events such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter, when M&S launches temporary new designs.

Colin is made of chocolate sponge and buttercream, covered in a chocolate shell, and costs £7.

Aldi launched its copycat Cuthbert cake in 2019 for £4.99.

Most supermarkets now have their own version, including Waitrose’s Cecil, Charlie at the Co-op, and Tesco’s Curly cake.
