Despite clear interest from Premier League champions Liverpool, the latest Betfair odds suggest Isak is still marginally more likely to stay at St James’ Park than seal a blockbuster move away.
According to the bookmaker, Isak is 4/6 to remain at Newcastle, while a move to Liverpool is priced at 8/11.
Isak, 25, caused a stir on social media earlier this week, accusing the club of breaking promises and declaring that the “relationship can’t continue.”
Reports from The Athletic claim the striker is adamant he will never play for Newcastle again, even if the club refuse to sell and he remains on Tyneside past the deadline.
Isak believed he would be allowed to leave this summer if a top club came in with a suitable offer. That moment appeared to arrive earlier this month when Liverpool tabled a bid worth £110million – but Newcastle rejected the proposal.
In response, the Magpies issued a strongly worded statement, denying Isak’s claims and reaffirming their stance that the striker is not for sale.
Newcastle said: “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views.
“As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”
Betfair Spokesperson, James Mackie said: “Following the bombshell statements from both player and club last night Alexander Isak is now as short as 8/11 to join Liverpool during this summer transfer window.
“Interestingly he is still very short odds at 4/6 not to sign or agree a contract with any other club with Newcastle still adamant that the player is not for sale.”
