Castleford will be the first location for Asda‘s newest “Express” stores, with a further 20 opening in October and November.

The retailer is looking to grow its offering of smaller stores to cater for shoppers in city centres in towns.

It previously announced that it would open 25 new Express stores between June and December this year, after opening its first convenience store in 2022.

The stores stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products, and are aimed at customers who want to pop to the shop to pick up essentials like bread and milk or grab a takeaway lunch.

Asda chief supply chain officer David Lepley said: “We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK.

“In just three years, we’ve grown from zero convenience stores to establishing a major presence in the channel, with almost 500 stores by the end of the year.

“This continued investment reflects the confidence we have in our convenience strategy and our focus on bringing Asda’s low prices to more local communities.”

The supermarket’s new chairman, Allan Leighton, appears to be the driving force behind the huge expansion.

The 72-year-old ex-boss returned to the business last year to try an turn around its fortunes.

It has been struggling since a £6.8billion buyout by Blackburn brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa and private equity firm TDR Capital in 2021.

TDR bought out Zuber Issa’s stake last June.

More Asda changes

The store expansion is one of several updates being made by the struggling retailer, which recorded a 2.6% fall in sales in the three months to August 10, according to latest Worldpanel industry figures.

Asda is currently in the process of giving its 180 in-store cafes a £10million makeover, with works set to be completed by the end of October.

The cafe will be upgraded to include new digital ordering screens where shoppers can pick what food and drink they want.

Customers will also be able to order from their tables or via staffed tills.

Separately, Asda is making huge changes to its online grocery deliveries for customers.

The supermarket is updating its app, so shoppers will be able to see a “map view” of where their delivery driver is.

It said it was also bringing in faster and more relevant search results for its online shoppers.

Meanwhile, the retailer opened its first ever standalone George clothing store in May this year.

The debut store opened at the Crown Point Retail Park in Leeds, and the new concept stores could be rolled out to other locations around the UK if it’s a success.
