Bakery chain with over 100 sites and ‘better than Greggs’ opening new stores across UK

A BAKERY chain dubbed “better than Greggs” is opening a number of new stores across the UK.

Wenzel’s The Bakers, which has been on the UK high street since 1975, is plotting another expansion plan.

The chain, that sells everything from pizza to meal deals, is teaming up with Southern Co-op to launch new franchise stores across the UK.

Wenzel’s already has over 100 stores across the UK and opened nine locations at the end of 2023.

It’s first new stand alone branch will open on September 10 in Guildford, with a number of other chains expected to open after that.

Wenzel’s said it can not currently confirm the exact number of stores that will open or where they will be located.

It added: “We see Co-op as a key partner in terms of strengthening our store count in both the short and long term.”

“We look forward to working with Southern Coop on these openings to bolster our nationwide presence, offering great-tasting baked goods to communities across the UK.”

Sarah Wenzel, chief of Wenzel’s, said: “We’re delighted that Southern Co-op have chosen to be our franchise partner and are confident that our collaborative partnership will be mutually beneficial and rewarding in the coming year”.

But news of the expansion will come as good news to those who say that chain is “better than” Greggs.

On X, one fan said: “Wenzel’s vegan sausage roll is better than Greggs and their doughnuts *chefs kiss*”.

While another lover of the chain said: “Wenzel’s vegan sausage roll is far superior to Gregg’s, which I wasn’t sure was possible.”

And a third added: “Nothing can beat a hot, sugared jam doughnut from Wenzel’s.”

The chain sells a sausge roll for £2.50, which is more pricey than Gregg’s £1.30 offer.

The chain also sells wraps for £5.60 and pasta for £3.25.

MORE OPENINGS

And Wenzel’s is not the only chain with a major expansion plan.

B&M is opening 45 new stores this year, as Brits continue to seek out bargain goods.

The locations stretch from the top to the tail of Britain, from Kent to Cumbria to Carlisle.

Aldi will also open up 11 more stores this year after including branches in Nelson, Durham and Chesterfield.

In May, it revealed another list of 10 locations where it wants to open stores this summer, including in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk.

The budget chain has also injected £55million into its capital city stores alone, with four of the new branches being in London.
