Cops injured after ‘unknown liquid’ thrown at them in city centre as man, 25, arrested over hurling ‘noxious substance’

THREE cops have been injured after an unknown liquid was thrown at them in a city centre.

The three on-duty police officers had the unknown substance thrown on them while they were responding to reports of an affray in Leicester city centre in the early hours of this morning.

Leicestershire Police believe the liquid may have also hit some members of the public who were in the King Street area when the substance was thrown (at around 4.50am).

While it is unknown what the liquid is at this time, medical professionals do not believe there will be any lasting effects, cops said.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and remains in police custody where he is being questioned by detectives.

Cops are appealing to those who have been affected by the substance as well as anyone who may have seen what happened.

DI Jenny Tattersall said: “The officers were taken to hospital after the liquid significantly irritated their skin and eyes. They have been monitored over several hours and discharged this morning.

“While we don’t know what the substance is at this stage and tests will be carried out, medical professionals have indicated that there will be no lasting damage.

“We know that there were other people in the area at the time the liquid was thrown and I’d like anyone who may had been contaminated with it to contact us. It may be on items of clothing, and that will be further evidence.

“Equally, if you were in the area and saw what happened in the incident, or in the moments before or after, I’m interested in hearing from you. We know from CCTV enquiries that there were a lot of people in the area at the time.”
