While both of her daughters with husband Tim have followed her footsteps in telly, her only son Samuel, 28, tends to keep a low profile, working instead in the corporate communications sector.

Yet next month he is stepping into the spotlight as he tackles a huge charity trek with his Corrie actress mum.

Posting a snap of them both to her Instagram page Sally – who has battled breast cancer both in her personal life and on-screen – told how they would be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for Prevent Breast Cancer.

In her caption she wrote: “My son Sam and I have some news!

“We will be climbing the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, Kilimanjaro in September for @preventbreastcancer.

“It will be 16 years since my diagnosis.

“Like so many other family’s we never thought this would happen to us but it did.

“Help us break the cycle of breast cancer.

Anything you can donate would go directly to @preventbreastcancer. JustGiving link in bio.”

Sally revealed her own cancer news in 2009 – at the same time as her character’s medical turmoil played out on-screen.

Her daughter Hattie was quick to respond to her Instagram post with the words: “So proud of you both.”

Her co-star Sally Carman then added: “Pair of absolute legends.”

STRONG BOND

On the charity fundraising page, which has scooped £9,869 at the time of writing, Sam posted an emotional tribute to his mum.

He wrote of his mum’s previous cancer diagnosis and said: “Today, my mum is not just a survivor- she’s also a passionate advocate and Patron for Prevent Breast Cancer, raising awareness and supporting the vital research needed to prevent others from facing what she went through.

Meanwhile, her daughter Phoebe plays the lead in the popular Netflix period drama Bridgerton.

Phoebe secured her most prominent role to date as Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter in a powerful and wealthy family, who wants to meet a man and get married.

The star’s career began back in 2009 as Siobhan Mailey on BBC’s Waterloo Road.

She later went on to star in the likes of Monroe, Prisoners’ Wives, The Village, The Musketeers and Snatch.

MUM STRUGGLES

Sally previously talked to The Sun about her mum struggles as her brood grew up.

She said: “Every time I watch my kids walking off with a backpack, I think ‘Aw, they’re growing older. They don’t need me as much.’

“I might have to get another dog.”

Meanwhile, she opened up on the advice she received from her own mum-in-law after her eldest told her of her desire for a career in acting.

She said: “My mother-in-law Shirley said to me ‘You mustn’t dissuade her. Actors are the most wonderful people in the world and the most fun.’

“I thought: ‘She’s absolutely right’, and even if it’s very difficult she’s going to have a great time.

“I was probably more nervous watching her in something than I’d ever been for me, but she’s doing okay.”
