Elizabeth Hurley reveals how she really feels about Maya Jama pulling Ruben Dias with iconic safety pin dress

LOVE Island host Maya Jama is pinning her hopes on being a style icon — with Liz Hurley happy to take some of the credit.

The actress shot to fame 31 years ago when she wore a £3,000 Versace frock held together with safety pins to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Maya, 30, wore a near-identical dress to the MTV Europe Music Awards last November, where she first met her new fella, Manchester City footballer Ruben Dias.

Learning of the link, Liz, 60, said: “I mean, to me, it’s really odd but it’s actually kind of fabulous.

“Over the years, people have said to me, it’s the dress’s 20th birthday, or it’s the dress’s 25th, and I’m like, this is insane.”

Liz, then a little-known model, wore the dress in May 1994 — three months before Maya was born.

Maya’s version, with slashed thigh and gold pins, was especially sourced for her by her team.

She went on to wear all vintage, curated looks for ITV show Love Island but said: “It’s all stuff that I can’t rip or ruin because it has to go back after.”

Liz will next be seen on TV this Sunday playing a dead diva as part of new Channel 4 game show The Inheritance.

Players have to compete to win her loot whilst she mostly lies in a coffin.
