Vinny was subject to a brutal homophobic attack by Mike[/caption]

During the episode, that aired on August 14, Vinny realised that Mike, a man who he met on an online support forum, had a dark ulterior motive for befriending him, which lead to Vinny being attacked.

Viewers were left horrified by the distressing moment, with a total of 279 contacting Ofcom with their concerns.

Ofcom said the “complaints objected to violent and sexual content before the watershed.”

In the lead up to the episode, Vinny began speaking to Mike online after he questioned his sexuality.

But things quickly took a sinister turn when Mike turned up at Vinny’s home, claiming his girlfriend had chucked him out.

Mike then turned nasty and began hurling abuse at Vinny’s sexuality.

Things then became physical as Mike brutally beat him up Vinny and repeatedly punched and kicked him.

Vinny was left cowering on the floor in agony.

But the torment didn’t end there.

Mike forced Vinny to transfer £10k to his account after he secretly recorded him confessing to being confused about his sexuality.

Vinny, who is engaged to Gabby Thomas, obliged with the viscous request.

To add salt in the wound, evil Mike then stole Vinny and Gabby’s wedding rings and made a getaway.

Viewers were left in tears over the heartbreaking scenes.

One wrote: “How powerful were the Vinny scenes last night? So sad seeing poor Vinny get beaten again – for nothing. He was being vulnerable and honest in who he is. Hope Mike gets his comeuppance!”

A second said: “I knew there was something fishy about that bloke when Vinny first met him, but I wish Emmerdale hadn’t got as dark as this. I much prefer the old.”

A third commented: “No need for such violence”.

Another added: “Appalling, disgusting storyline. Why don’t you just get Tarantino or Guy Ritchie to direct. Vinny was a lovely character.”
