They found an old message from their late son while giving their kitchen a makeover last summer.
Margaret explained: “Where they’d taken one of the original cupboards off the wall, this was behind it…
“And it was a complete shock to see it there.”
Chris wrote the message on plaster in 1989, when he was roughly 14 years old.
He died aged 35, after having a rare form of testicular cancer, 18 months following his diagnosis.
The message read: “This is original wallpaper. Friday 4:15 8th December 1989.
“Please leave this wallpaper, Chris.”
The builder managed to get Chris’ message off the wall still in one piece.
Although it unfortunately later crumbled when Margaret put it down on the bed.
Not wanting to throw the pieces away, John and Margaret brought them to The Repair Shop.
Margaret said: “He would often scribble little notes that he would leave around the house, some of them saying “I love you”.
Speaking about losing Chris, she recalled: “When you lose a child, you never get over it, you get through it.
“We’ve got through it.”
Expert Rob worked his magic, restoring the message and preserving it inside a frame.
Not believing their eyes, Margaret said: “Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Even the torn bits of paper back together.
“Better than I ever would have imagined it to be.”
John added: “He was a lovely boy.”
Taking to X, one viewer commented: “That wallpaper repair is superb.”
Another added: “That was such a lovely repair and the tears flowed.”
A third said: “Yeah, that one’s emotional…”
While a fourth chimed in: “I love #therepairshop and that bit of old plaster with writing from their son that passed away was a brilliant job and sooo moving.”
The Repair Shop airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
