The test went off at 3pm with many fans at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton having their phones sound the alarms.
Organisers for the ODI were prepared for the test as they paused the action so there would not be a major disruption to the live action.
As the clock struck alarms rang out around the ground just seconds after Will Jacks hit a tremendous six.
People in the crowd could be seen checking their phones after the noise.
By the time the alarm had sounded, England had impressed with the bat in the opening innings.
Jamie Smith, Joe Root and Jacob Bethall had all knocked half-centuries.
Bethall was the pick of the batters as he converted his 50 into a brilliant century before the 40th over – his first in professional cricket.
Root also turned his 50 into a century off 96 balls before he was caught out.
England went into the third ODI of the series playing for pride as they lost both of the first two to the touring Proteas.
The first match ended in a humiliating seven-wicket defeat as England were skittled out for just 131 runs in 24.3 overs.
The second match saw a much better performance from Harry Brook’s side as they fell just five runs short of the 330 target.
England and South Africa’s games will not end after the third ODI.
The two sides will then have a three-match T20 series with the first match set for Wednesday in Cardiff.
The second match of this series will be in Manchester on Friday before the finale on September 14 at Trent Bridge.
Other sporting fixtures were also prepared for the emergency test by reorganising their start times.
The Super League derby between Hull KR and Hull FC will now kick off at 3.05pm.
This is so the game will start after the alarm has sounded.
