From avoiding a specific hair colour to choosing a fringe to help hide your wrinkles, he shares his top expert advice.

1. Steer clear of dark hair

Many of us may be tempted to go dark for the upcoming autumn and winter months.

However, Michael has warned against this, noting that the darker you decide to go, the quicker you’ll see the regrowth.

“As a guide, it’s a good idea to think about having a lighter colour on your hair,” he says, speaking to Hello!

“This can be more flattering against your skin and less likely to see the regrowth as quickly.”

He goes on to advise considering highlights, adding that they’re not only flattering but are the perfect way to hide regrowth.

2. Embrace fringes

Have you ever considered getting a fringe but chickened out last minute?

Well, you’re not alone! Although it seems to be a big decision to make, Michael encourages you to go for it!

“Having a fringe is a great way of hiding unwanted lines and wrinkles, especially on the forehead and around the eyes,” he explains.

According to the celebrity hairstylist, he’d recommend opting for a concave-shaped fringe like Davina, which is shorter in the middle and longer on the sides.

Hair re-growth FAQs

Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist and Brand President at Philip Kingsley spoke exclusively to Fabulous.

How long does it take for hair to grow back?

Hair grows, on average, half an inch a month. You cannot speed this up.

Do rosemary oil and scalp massages work?

Oils do not promote hair growth. In terms of rosemary oil, the current trend stems from one small study carried out on 50 men in 2015. No women were involved, and the study compared the effects of 2 per cent minoxidil to Rosemary oil. 2 per cent minoxidil doesn’t do much for
male pattern hair loss anyway, so the results were not very impressive.  Oils do serve a purpose in conditioning hair treatments though. They help add shine and smooth the hair cuticle to lock-in moisture and improve combability.  Scalp massages alone won’t cure hair loss, but it can help relax you, aid in lymphatic drainage, exfoliate and help topicals penetrate.

Are there any products or foods/vitamins you recommend someone using or eating to help with hair regrowth?

To support healthy hair regrowth, if you are experiencing hair thinning we’d recommend our Density Preserving Scalp Drops clinically proven to help slow hair loss with continued daily use within three months.

Telogen effluvium (hair shedding) due to nutritional deficiencies can often be simply treated with changes to your diet, and nutritional supplements such as our specially formulated Density Healthy Hair Complex and Density Amino Acid Booster.

Iron and Ferritin (stored iron) in red meat, dried apricots and dark, leafy greens. Vitamin B12 in animal products and fortified plant-based foods. Protein from oily fish, lean meat, cottage cheese, tofu, nuts, chickpeas, and beans.

However, there may be an underlying cause for their hair loss and rather than this being masked by using an off-the-shelf product, they should be encouraged to seek the advice of a specialist such as a Trichologist.

3. Get learning

While popping to the salon for a blow dry is likely to leave you feeling and looking like a million dollars, it can be costly and isn’t realistic for your day-to-day life.

That’s why Michael recommends purchasing yourself a round bristle brush and hairdryer with a nozzle and teaching yourself to blow dry your own hair.

4. Don’t blow-dry every day

Many of us are guilty of washing our hair and quickly giving it a blast with the hairdryer to get it dry in minutes.

But Michael highlights the importance of allowing your hair to dry naturally at least once or twice a week.

Having a fringe is a great way of hiding unwanted lines and wrinkles, especially on the forehead and around the eyes,

“I recommend using an air-dry cream combined with a mousse or a blow-dry spray on freshly shampooed hair, leaving it to air-dry without touching it and seeing what happens,” he says.

According to the hair whizz, this will help to prevent any further heat damage and could save you some precious time in the morning when it comes to getting ready.

5. Don’t neglect your haircare routine

Chances are if you’ve ever tried a shampoo and conditioner that have left your hair looking fresh and shiny, then you haven’t even thought about changing it up.

But Michael urges you to introduce new ones in midlife – and even shares his recommendations.

“OGX is one of my favourite affordable ranges,” he reveals.

“The ingredients are reliable and the formulations are second to none, plus the price point is good for everyone.”

He goes on to note that for dry, grey hair, try OGX’S Argan Oil of Morocco, as they’re all designed for greying older hair.
