MANCHESTER UNITED’S flops returned to training looking glum after the most embarrassing defeat of their careers.
The Red Devils crashed out on penalties to League Two Grimsby – the first time they have ever been eliminated by a fourth-tier side – in a huge giant-killing on Wednesday.

United had gone 2-0 down inside 30 minutes, with Andre Onana putting in possibly his worst ever showing in goal, before a second-half fightback through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire‘s goals.
But it was ultimately all for nought as they lost on penalties 12-11, with new signings Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo missing from 12 yards.
And the weight of their defeat to a club 58 places lower than them in the English football pyramid appeared to be weighing heavily on them as they arrived at Carrington the following morning.
Boss Ruben Amorim – whose survival odds have been slashed by the bookies as his horror tenure continues – was seen back at base at 7AM.
The rest of United’s multi-million pound disappointments followed suit and had all checked in at the new-look facility – after a £50million facelift was completed this summer – by 11am.
Many of them turned up in luxury branded cars, including Range Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Aston Martin and Cadillac.
The likes of Cunha and Manuel Ugarte also wore glasses behind the wheel, while bomb-squad member Rasmus Hojlund was also seen arriving.
Fans have made their feelings clear about the result on social media, moaning they have been “bantered off the earth” as the club hit a new low.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot were part of a previous low in 2023 when the club was hit for seven by Liverpool at Anfield.
Casemiro and Luke Shaw also remain as survivors in the squad from then, but were not involved against Grimsby, with Casemiro an unused sub and Shaw not named in the matchday squad.
But Shaw, 30, was at United the last time the club lost in the Carabao Cup second round – an infamous 4-0 defeat to MK Dons – back in 2014 under Louis van Gaal, although he was not involved that day either as he nursed a hamstring injury.
Amorim made his thoughts on his team’s display against Grimsby abundantly clear, admitting his players “spoke” with their actions about what they wanted.
The 40-year-old told Sky Sports: “In the end, it doesn’t matter if we recover or not, it’s the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game.
Man Utd ratings v Grimsby
MANCHESTER UNITED are at rock bottom after the biggest cup upset saw the club crash out of the Carabao Cup second-round to League Two Grimsby Town on penalties.
Ruben Amorim’s United lost to a four-tier side for the first time ever.
The home fans sang “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to Amorim throughout and you can’t help but wonder if they’re right.
Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated United’s flops at Blundell Park.
“I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.
“The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. We lost, the best team won…
“I Think it’s really clear what they spoke, so let’s move on from this day and I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.
“The way we start the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that’s why I think they spoke really loud.”
United face Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday, the final game before the first international break of the season.
