MANY of us enjoy having house guests, however, autumn can also see another guest head for our homes – spiders.
Spider mating season, which used to start in September, has started coming earlier and earlier due to weather changes in the UK, meaning many are seeing spiders in their homes now as male spiders are driven inside to find a female mate.
While spiders in the UK are harmless the majority of the time, they’re not anyone’s first choice of guest[/caption]
Luckily, one mum, from Plymouth, has come to rescue with an easy solution – and it takes just seconds[/caption]
And while spiders in the UK are harmless the majority of the time, they’re not anyone’s first choice of guest.
Off of the back of this, one TikToker has come to rescue with an easy hack to keep spiders away from your home – and it costs just 5p per use.
There are a few scents that spiders dislike – cinnamon, mint, lavender and lemon.
While many people swear by using essential oils, according to mum Danielle you can also use a scented kitchen cleaner to keep the creepy crawlies at bay.
Sharing the simple trick on her page, the savvy mum, from Plymouth, said that her family had already had ”a huge unwanted eight-legged visitor in the house”.
To tackle this, Danielle now uses Astonish Kitchen Cleaner in Zesty Lemon, which you can buy for just £1 at Morrisons and Savers.
In the video, Danielle could be seen generously spraying the product around the different entry points of her home, including around the windows and downstairs doors.
But there are also other simple tricks to be aware of, flooring expert James Higgins at Online Carpets revealed.
James said: “Spiders love moist environments, and so they will likely be heading into any rooms with hot water and appliances, which means you’re more likely to find spiders in kitchens and bathrooms.
“And when does spider season end? Well, luckily, spider mating season only lasts through September and October, so after Halloween you should be free from any creepy crawlies.
“While it’s been commonly said that placing conkers around your home is the best way to get rid of spiders, sadly, scattering chestnuts around your home seems to just be an old wives’ tale with no scientific backing.
“Although there is no way to fully spider-proof your home, there are some natural remedies you can use to keep spiders away as mating season approaches.”
Block any gaps in your home
The first step when looking at how to get rid of spiders in the house is to seal their entryways.
If you’ve spotted any, it’s essential to block any gaps in walls and pipes, and seal any cracks to stop them from making their way in, the expert said.
Clean, clean, clean
“You should then clean off any windowsills – especially any that already have cobwebs – as the dirt and build up could be attracting insects, and then, spiders,” James warned.
For this, he advised to use a simple mix of white vinegar and warm water to spray over your windows and windowsills.
“You will also want to do regular cleaning inside your home. Spiders love hiding – so it’s key to keep tidying and decluttering to remove their hiding places.
“Make sure you dust and vacuum regularly if you spot any spiderwebs.
“It’s also important to keep your bin closed, away from windows, and regularly cleaned. Flies love our bins, and if you’re attracting flies, you’ll probably attract some spiders too.”

Create a homemade spider repellent
If you’re looking for a particularly quick fix, the whizz advised to make your own spider repellent by mixing around 20 drops of an essential oil with water in a spray bottle.
You can choose from lemon, peppermint or lavender essential oils to give your home a lovely smell, and fend off any spiders at the same time.
With this solution, simply spray your mixture in any corners or crevices where spiders are likely to be hiding.
“You can also create your own cleaning solution by mixing a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and warm water, and then add a few drops of your chosen essential oil,” James said.
”You can use this trick when it comes to cleaning any laminate or vinyl flooring that you may have in your kitchen or bathroom – perfect for the spider hotspots.”
‘They are getting brave this year’
Posted less than a week ago, Danielle’s video has already racked up more than a whopping 800k views, with hundreds flooding to comments.
One horrified TikToker said: ”We currently have a hench one living under our sofa. After many attempts to catch him he now has legal rights to the whole room.”
Someone else shared their top remedy, writing: ”I put lavender and peppermint oil on a cotton pad and stuffed it in the corner of my window I’ve had no spiders since.”
A third chuckled: ”I feel like they are getting brave this year tho.”
