TRAVELLING can be stressful enough without finding out that a piece of luggage is too big, or doesn’t fit the dimensions to take onboard an aeroplane.
Each airline has a different baggage policy, which means it’s important to check ahead of time.
Here are all the carry-on rules you need to know about for different airlines.
easyJet
Budget-friendly airline easyJet allows passengers to bring one piece of cabin luggage onboard, free of charge.
However, there are several stringent requirements that each person’s bag must meet.
It must be able to fit under the seat and must measure under 45 x 36 x 20 cm, including wheels and handles.
An Up Front or Extra Legroom seat allows passengers to bring an additional larger bag measuring up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm.
This larger bag can be stowed in the overhead locker.
It costs extra to reserve a seat and to bring a 14kg check-in bag, but a 45 x 36 x 20cm bag should suffice for a short trip.
Jet2
Jet2 also permits one piece of hand luggage per passenger.
This bag can be slightly bigger than easyJet’s allowance, measuring at 56 x 45 x 25cm.
However, Jet2 does enforce a weight limit of 10kg.
Cabin luggage must fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front.
Ryanair
Ryanair has been flying passengers to destinations across the world since 1984 and is known for keeping costs low.
The low-cost airline includes one small bag in its base fare and the dimensions for that bag are 40 x 20 x 25 cm.
It must also fit under the seat in front.
Passengers who purchase Priority Boarding can bring an additional bag measuring 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
This larger bag has a weight limit of 10 kg.
British Airways
British Airways allows its passengers one cabin bag and one personal item, which is much more baggage than a budget airline.
The cabin bag can measure up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm and weigh 23 kg.
A personal item can measure up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
British Airways allows passengers to stow their bags in the overhead lockers or under the seat.
Wizz Air
Wizz Air passengers are only offered one small bag carry-on bag in its basic fare.
As it measures just 40 x 30 x 20cm, it can be a tight squeeze but Wizz Air do offer an upgrade package.
Holidaymakers can bring a larger bag measuring 55 x 40 x 23cm, though this will mean that they have to pay extra.
The larger bag has a weight limit of 10 kg and can be stowed overhead.
TUI
Like many other airlines, TUI permits one piece of hand luggage per passenger.
However, this bag is allowed to be much larger than the standard carry-on bag most airlines allow.
TUI’s maximum carry-on size is 55 x 40 x 20 cm, with a weight limit of 10kg.
Cabin luggage must fit in overhead lockers or under the seat in front.
Vueling
Vueling includes one cabin bag and one personal item in its basic fare.
The cabin bag can measure up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
The personal item should fit under the seat and measure up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm.
There is a combined weight limit of 10 kg.
Emirates
Luxury airline Emirates allows one cabin bag for Economy Class passengers.
The maximum dimensions are 55 x 38 x 20 cm.
The weight limit is 7 kg.
Business and First Class passengers can bring two cabin bags with a combined weight of 14 kg.
Virgin Atlantic
As one of the most stylish airlines in the world, Virgin offers a huge amount of luggage to its passengers.
Those in Economy Light, Economy Classic, and Economy Delight, are permitted to bring one piece of hand luggage weighing a maximum of 10kg on board.
This can measure up to 23 x 36 x 56cm and must be be stored in the overhead locker.
In addition to the main cabin bag, all passengers are also allowed a small personal item such as a backpack that can fit under the seat in front of them.
Plus, each holidaymaker is offered a 1 x 23kg bag to check-in free.
Norse Air
Norse Air offers a range of economy seating, which all include a small personal item and a carry-on bag.
The small personal item can measure 40 x 30 x 15 cm and there is no weight restriction.
However, the carry-on bag can only weigh up to 10kg and can measure up until 56 x 45 x 25 cm.
Any baggage which exceeds these dimensions will incur extra charges.
Cabin luggage allowance on airlines
Each airline has different rules for in-cabin luggage allowances.
This means it can sometimes feel like a guessing game, when it comes to knowing whether a bag is eligible to go in the cabin.
Ryanair issued a warning about some colours of luggage make them more difficult to identify.
The airline warned against neutral colours like grey, dark blue and black and encouraged passengers to use bright, distinct colours like red and yellow.
Amazon offers a range of bags which come in over 20 colours, helping holidaymakers to keep track of their luggage.
Another £11 bag is perfect for easyJet’s stringent rules, with some shoppers describing it as “surprising spacious”.
The online retailer offers a budget-friendly £5.99 bag, which is also the correct measurements for American airlines Delta, Spirit and Frontier.
Supermarkets including Asda offer a range of high-end luggage too, as does low-cost retailer B&M, which even offers a range of children’s luggage.
