Huge new Olympic-sized lido could open in UK city with sauna pods and ‘clubhouse’

The fully lifeguarded six-lane pool will be 50m long with a fixed depth of 1.3 m and will float in the Eden Dock area of Canary Wharf.

The proposal sketch shows that next to the pool will be four sauna pods as well as plenty of seating areas and picnic tables.

Also built next to the lido will be a clubhouse and pop up food and drink venues where swimmers can get a bite to eat after their swim.

The lido will be cut off from the River Thames and naturally filtered, plus, the water quality in Eden Dock is consistently rated “Excellent” by EU Bathing Standards.

Eden Dock is already a firm-favourite of open water swimmers across the UK and the new venue is set to be a hub for health and wellbeing in the city.

It is being designed and built by Sea Lanes, who were behind Sea Lanes Brighton, the UK’s first National Open Water Swimming Centre

A planning application will be submitted to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in September 2025.

Shobi Khan, CEO of Canary Wharf Group, said: “Almost one year on from the opening of Eden Dock, we’re making another bold step forward.

“Sea Lanes Canary Wharf will build on the success of Eden Dock as a unique wellness destination”.

If the plans get accepted, the lido, called Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, will open in summer 2026.

The lido is set to be built at Eden Dock at Canary Wharf which opened to the public on October 2, 2024.

The Eden Dock is described as a “waterfront oasis in the heart of Canary Wharf”.

It has aquatic islands, marine habitats, art installations and plenty of water activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, as well as yoga by the water.

The hub in Canary Wharf was made to create a slice of nature in the city and already has an open water venue.

Keen swimmers can already take a dip at Eden Dock with a view of One Canada Square and Newfoundland – but it’s not open all-year round.

The open water venue has toilets, changing rooms, and an outdoor warm water rinse shower.

A swim session at Eden Dock typically cost £8-£9.50 per session.

There are lots of events happening in Eden Dock throughout the year too, like open air cinema and live music performances.

There is also sport set up, like mini-golf and table tennis, to organised run clubs.

Here’s more on the English lido hidden in the heart of London that people may not realise exists – and it’s heated all year round.

For even more lidos, here’s where you’ll find every single one in the UK – with water slides, cocktail bars and some are even FREE to enter.
