I left the UK & my monthly spending is less than my old rent – but here’s what they don’t tell you about moving abroad

A WOMAN who ditched the UK has revealed what it’s like moving to the other side of the world.

Laura decided to leave the UK to become an English teacher in China for a year, but she loved it so much she’s extended her contract.

Taking to social media, Laura now shares what life is like in Shenzhen, a southern city, which is the third most populated in the country with over 17 million residents.

In a recent clip, Laura shared her monthly outgoings, and revealed it was less than what she would spend on rent alone in the UK.

First up were her household bills and rent, she spent just £822 on a three bedroom apartment with a large outdoor terrace.

This was her biggest expense, with household bills costing just £90 a month.

She also revealed that socialising and lifestyle costs are much cheaper than in England.

Eating out and partying cost her just £137 a month, while monthly groceries and eating out once a day set her back just £101.

She added that transport, including taxis which cost her £58 for the month, adding that one 25-minute taxi ride set her back just £3.

Laura was also able to get monthly treats without breaking the bank, a gel manicure set her back £6 and she was able to get three massages a month, all reimbursed with her insurance.

Although Laura loves the lifestyle of China and its affordability, she did reveal it does come with some downsides.

But her new life abroad does come with downsides[/caption]

While we all hate using public restrooms, she said it was often worse where she lived as she shared a clip of what a classic public toilet looked like.

Panning around the room, the toilets lined together had no doors, just a small partition wall between them.

Privacy wasn’t the only issue though, the bathroom had no actual toilets, instead having a hole in the floor to do your business, and there was no toilet paper in sight.

She said these were the only public loos in a two mile radius, adding: “Privacy goes out the window.

“You wash your hands outside, where a woman was washing her knickers as well.

“An authentic experience to say the least.”

The clips soon went viral on her TikTok account @laura_explaura with over 2 million views.

People were quick to comment, horrified by the public loo situation.

One person wrote: “I have nightmares about stuff like this.”

Moving house hacks

1. Declutter Before You Pack

Sort through your belongings and get rid of anything you no longer need. Donate, sell, or recycle items to lighten your load.

2. Create an Inventory

Make a list of all your items. This helps keep track of everything and ensures nothing gets lost in the move.

3. Use Quality Packing Materials

Invest in sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape. This will protect your belongings during the move.

4. Label Everything

Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking much easier and more organized.

5. Pack a ‘First Day’ Box

Include essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, and important documents. This will keep you from rummaging through boxes on your first day.

6. Take Photos of Electronics Setup

Before unplugging your electronics, take photos of the wiring setup. This will make it easier to reconnect everything at your new place.

7. Use Suitcases for Heavy Items

Pack books and other heavy items in rolling suitcases. This makes them easier to transport and reduces the risk of injury.

8. Colour-Code Your Boxes

Use different coloured stickers or markers for each room. This will help movers quickly identify where each box should go in your new home.

Another commented: “The differences in toilets don’t bother me. The lack of any privacy is odd.”

“I’ve had recurring nightmares where I can’t find a decent toilet. So this is quite literally my nightmares!!” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Been there. done that. Cried a lot.”

“No doors is wild,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “This is a literal fever dream situation.”
