Major supermarket to give 28,000 workers new pay rise in DAYS as it takes on Lidl

A MAJOR supermarket will give 28,000 workers another pay rise as it takes on Lidl.

Aldi said its colleagues on an hourly wage will receive a bigger than expected pay rise in just a few days.

Last month, the discounter said pay for store assistants would rise from £12.75 an hour to £13 come September 1.

This will now rise to £13.02 an hour, plus the rate increases to £13.95 for longer serving staff.

In London, the new rates are rising from £14.05 an hour to £14.35.

Meanwhile, longer serving London staff will see their hourly wage increase to £14.66.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our colleagues are at the heart of our success, and we’re committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded for the outstanding work they do.

“This higher than planned pay rise is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay.”

Already the UK’s highest-paying supermarket Aldi, which uses the slogan “Better Everyday”, last increased its minimum hourly pay to £12.75 nationally and £14.05 in London earlier this year.

Aldi is also the only retailer to offer all colleagues paid breaks, which is worth approximately £1,425 a year for the average store colleague.

The pay boost comes just days after Lidl said it would hike wages from from £12.75 to £13.00 nationally.

Staff at the bargain grocery chain will see the change come into effect on September.

Speaking at the time, Stephanie Rogers, chief people officer at Lidl GB, said it would “continue to ensure we are market leading on pay”.

Both retailers exceed the Real Living Wage of £12.60 and National Living Wage of £12.21

It comes as Aldi is investing £650million to expand from 1,050 to 1,500 stores nationwide.

How to save money at Aldi

Unlike other major grocers, Aldi does not have a rewards or point card system but that does not mean you cannot save on your shop

Every week the store releases a list of special buys, which are unique bargain products you find online at Aldi and in store.

The store releases a fresh range of deals every Thursday and Sunday, so be sure to check regularly to see what’s new.

Aldi opening stores

Unlike many retailers, Aldi is planning to open more sites.

The brand has earmarked 11 areas for new stores.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi, said: “We’re now opening an average of one new store a week for the rest of 2025, showing just how ambitious our plans are to build a store network that will help us reach millions of new customers.”

This is the full list of 11 new stores confirmed as opening:

  • Airfields, Welsh Road, Deeside
  • Rockingham Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire
  • Fulham Broadway, London
  • Pacific Drive, Eastbourne, East Sussex
  • Mafon Road, Nelson, Treharris

  • Commercial Street, Shoreditch, London
