A MAJOR UK city centre is set to be transformed into a village with 1,000 new homes and a public park in a new £40m regeneration plan.
The new “City Village” will also include a retail and community space, if councillors approve the plans later this year.

The first stage of the City Village
Plans have been submitted to the council for the first stage of “City Village”, which will transform Bradford’s old commercial centre into a new community based neighbourhood.
Bradford City Village, is proposed for the “Top of Town” area, which includes the Oastler, Kirkgate and Chain Street sites.
The project will create up to 1,000 homes including affordable housing and a new public space including three landscaped, green spaces.
Affordable housing provider, Incommunities, based in Bradford, was chosen to deliver the first phase of houses for sale and rent but it is subject to a final legal agreement.
It will provide a mix of townhouses and apartments
A mix of 64 two and three-bedroom townhouses will be situated on the northern Oastler site.
These will be arranged around a series of courtyards and green spaces, each with designated parking space.
In nearby Chain Street, 33 townhouses will be created around a new community green also with a designated parking space.
The two and three-bedroom homes on both sites will be designed to suit a range of household sizes and needs.
It is expected that the 1970s-built centre of Chain Street and the northern half of the Oastler zone, is likely to be demolished next month.
The plans include landscaped public spaces and active travel routes to promote health and wellbeing.
Later proposed plans
Later works would also include the demolition of Kirkgate Market with 400 new apartments to built there.
It will also see more than 300 apartments built on the southern half of the Oastler site and a new play park situated on Darley Street.
The scheme is funded through a combination of £13.2m from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and £30m from Homes England.
If plans are approved, demolition of the Oastler site is expected to begin later this year, ahead of work beginning in spring next year.
Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: “It is very exciting to be taking this next step towards realising the vision for City Village.
“Just as we’ve recently seen Darley Street Market successfully open its doors to great acclaim, so City Village will continue our work to transform the ‘top of town.’
“It will be game-changing for the city centre. City Village is so much more than a housing development.”
It’s about creating a thriving, people-centric neighbourhood that encourages activity and brings communities together.
“We are leading the way on this, and it will set the gold standard for the future of urban living.”
