Jack Whelan was one of three men who knifed Lyndon Brewster, 29, in an incident that occurred on June 12, 2016.

The unarmed victim was then left to die in a pool of his own blood on a Cardiff housing estate.

Whelan was later handed a life sentence at HMP Gartree, a high-security prison in Leicestershire.

However, he has since died behind bars on July 14 this year.

The prisons ombudsman is investigating his death.

Mr Brewster’s murder took place at the Brynfedw estate in Llanedeyrn.

Bristol Crown Court heard the victim had told his partner he was “popping out” to collect money he was owed.

However, when he phoned her at 6.30pm the call was interrupted by My Brewster’s attackers.

He could be heard saying, “The f*****s have set me up,” reports WalesOnline.

Whelan and his accomplices Dwayne Edgar and Robert Lainsbury, were spotted chasing the victim then knifing him in a brutal attack that lasted a matter of seconds.

Mr Brewster was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene.

He sustained serious injuries, including a 7cm deep stab wound in his back.

The three attackers were unanimously found guilty of murder by the jury in a 2019 retrial.

This was ordered after DC Rebecca Bryant of South Wales Police was found to have exchanged messages with one of the jurors in the original trial, Lauren Jones, who was dating her son.

Mr Brewster’s mother June Whittaker told the court that when she got to the scene her daughter informed him that her son had passed.

She described the impact of this news as being so instantaneous that she collapsed to the floor.

Ms Whittaker said: “I desperately wanted to see him and hold his hand and tell him how much I loved him.

“Part of me died with him and I will never be the same again.”

The court heard that just weeks later, Mr Brewster’s grandmother died, leaving Ms Whittaker to face unimaginable grief.

Mr Brewster’s partner Samantha discovered she was pregnant a few days after his death and she later gave birth to their daughter.

Whelan, from Norwich, was issued a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years.

His accomplices also faced life sentences – Lainsbury with a minimum of 26 years, and Edgar with a minimum of 25.

In his sentencing remarks Mr Justice Morris said: “This was a brazen, vicious, and brutal attack by the three of you, hunting down an unarmed man who was running away from you.

“At no stage has any of you shown any remorse for what you have done not for the enduring misery you have caused to others.”
