Marc Guehi’s dream Liverpool transfer collapsed after Crystal Palace made failed bid to get Kop star in swap deal

CRYSTAL PALACE asked for Joe Gomez as part of the deal for Marc Guehi before the move ultimately collapsed.

Guehi, 25, has been left fuming behind the scenes after his deadline day transfer to Liverpool fell through at the last minute.

SunSport understands that Guehi had the full backing of manager Oliver Glasner and chairman Steve Parish, who gave him the green light to proceed with his medical. Everything was set for a move to Liverpool.

Contrary to reports suggesting the Reds left their bid late, they first held a meeting with Palace on August 9.

They made their interest in Guehi clear and an official offer was submitted on August 10, following approval from Liverpool’s U.S.-based owners, SunSport can exclusively reveal.

However, Palace then let the matter rest as the transfer window neared its end.

Their next move was to demand either a £50million fee or for Joe Gomez to be included in the deal for Guehi.

Liverpool made it clear that Gomez, who still has two years left on his contract, would only be available in a separate deal, not as part of a package for Guehi, especially considering Guehi only has one year left on his current contract.

Both Liverpool and Guehi believed there was ample time for Palace to find a replacement, particularly since the defender had already informed the club of his desire not to leave on a free transfer, urging them to cash in while they could.

On the eve of deadline day, he had the blessing of all parties involved to go ahead and seal what would have been a dream move.

The England defender first heard of complications with the deal two hours into his medical but he went on to complete it at around 6:00 p.m on deadline day.

Sources say he personally could not get hold of Steve Parish, nor manager Oliver Glasner, to explain why the deal was being blocked.

He then requested a meeting with his representatives, during which Parish informed him that the club could not proceed with the transfer as they had failed to secure a suitable replacement.

While Guehi would have been happy to remain at Palace, a part of him now feels he has been misled, believing the club always knew they would not sanction the move, but led him to believe otherwise.
