FORGET that stray insect crawling on the cookies in Meghan Markle’s recent Instagram clip. It’s the controversial guest on the new series of her Netflix lifestyle show that’s really bugging the masses.
Step forward Chrissy Teigen; former model, cookery writer, TV personality and world-renowned cyber bully who is back from cancellation exile to appear on With Love, Meghan, season two, which dropped yesterday.
“Oh, my gosh, I could do this every day” gushes Teigen, as she joins Meghan in a crafting session at the vast, rented Californian mansion.
“Little things like this make me so happy.”
Oh, how simple, innocent and sweet…. but when the history’s so sour is anyone really buying it?
For the uninitiated, the controversy concerns some old social media messages sent by Teigen – the 39-year-old wife of singer-song-writer John Legend, that came to light a few years ago.
These included telling a then 16-year-old US model Courtney Stodden – best known for marrying 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchison – to kill herself, mocking actress Lindsay Lohan’s self-harm issues and calling “Teen Mom” reality star Farrah Abraham a “Whore”.
Not surprisingly, none of it really chimed with the cookbook author’s carefully curated feminist and family brand, which took a heavy dent with cancelled shows and brand endorsements.
For Meghan, a woman who famously claimed to be “the most bullied person in the world” and even launched an anti-cyber bullying initiative with Prince Harry, the association is at best odd or to her fiercest critics smacks of the ultimate mean girl’s alliance.
You see, saddled with the Duchess Difficult moniker, the 44-year-old has, of course, faced bullying allegations of her own.
Jason Knauf, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s former communications secretary claimed she bullied junior staff during her brief and rocky tenure at the palace – all of which she has always denied.
What we do know is the former actress has ruthless form for punishing (the arguably lesser mistakes) of those she’s been far closer to – the fear of a tarnished brand by association seemingly trumping old loyalties.
Just ask ditched former mega mate Jessica Mulroney who will no doubt feel aggrieved watching Meg and Chris chat over cupcakes some five years after she was banished from the Court of Markle following her own online spat and cancellation.
As a reminder, Mulroney – is the well-connected stylist who Meghan met in Toronto when she was filming TV drama Suits. The pair were once as tight as Markle’s rictus grin.
She was the first person the Duchess called after Harry’s proposal, her children were bridesmaids and page boys at the Sussexes wedding and she even accompanied the couple on the Sydney leg of their 2018 royal tour.
Yet all fizzled out faster than Meghan’s poor-selling wine following Mulroney’s 2020 row with black fashion blogger Sasha Exeter.
Mulroney took exception to her generic call to action to promote the Black Lives Matter campaign, a row ensued ending in a veiled threat to harm Exeter’s career prospects – a move branded the ultimate in “white priviledge” that saw Mulroney’s TV show I Do, Re Do, cancelled and no sign of Meghan ever again.
Hype and publicity
Tone deaf, ignorant and not very nice – but was Mulroney’s downfall really any worse than Teigen’s keyboard warrior antics?
So, what can we deduce from the inconsistencies? That Meghan gives different weight and value to the victims involved?
Picks and chooses issues she will tolerate – sees some disses as more acceptable than those linked to higher profile, fashionable and of the moment campaigns and causes?
Or perhaps there’s actually a far simpler explanation.
Don’t forget, it was only last month that it looked as if the Sussex’s 2020 Netflix deal, worth a reported $100 million would be axed completely.

The golden goose payday set to fund the couple’s post royal, quasi royal lifestyle in California was looking shaky, many of the projects slammed for “poor content” and dwindling viewer figures.
A lifeline from Netflix came this month. A watered-down “multi-year, first-look” deal was struck which means the streaming giant is not obligated to take on all content produced by the Sussexes and will pay only for projects it chooses to greenlight.
As someone who has always revelled in having an A list circle her much-flaunted famous friends seem a little thin on the ground
It’s not the same cache and the truth of the matter is Meghan is a whole lot more vulnerable these days.
As someone who has always revelled in having an A-list circle her much-flaunted famous friends seem a little thin on the ground.
Forget Oprah and Beyonce, the latest series of With Love, is awash with guests whose faces are best known to their friends and family or their most ardent fanbase if we’re being charitable.
The fact of the matter is that Chrissy Teigen is the biggest name to appear.
It seems in these high-pressure times that Markle is thinking less bout the optics and more about the simple benefits of hype and publicity – a shock guest that has got everyone talking may be all what’s needed to ramp up the relevance and visibility.
For a Duchess on the ropes – Oscar Wilde’s old adage: “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about,” has never been more true.
