Mr Kipling unveils new treat based on iconic British dessert as shoppers blast ‘offensive’ twist

MR Kipling has released a new treat based on a popular dessert – but shoppers are divided.

The cake giant has brought out tubs of Cherry Bakewell Mini Cake Bites which are currently selling in Tesco for £3.75 (or £3 with a Clubcard).

Mr Kipling is known for its delicious Cherry Bakewell Tarts, but these Mini Cake Bites have a twist – as they’re covered in chocolate.

The Newfoodsuk Facebook page shared the new find to followers, and the post attracted thousands of comments.

While some shoppers were excited to try the new treat, others seemed disgusted.

“Ruined by covering them in chocolate!” one person wrote.

Another said: “£3 clubcard price, but chocolate on a cherry bakewell?? I’m offended.”

A third person had some pretty choice words, saying: “Chocolate on a Bakewell. F*** off with that.”

The sweet treat is described as a light almond flavour cake topped with fruity jam and an almond and cherry flavour creme, with a milk chocolate covering.

Meanwhile a classic cherry bakewell has a pastry base with a layer of fruity jam frangipane sponge, soft icing and a cherry on top.

And while some people think you shouldn’t touch a classic cherry bakewell, others had much more positive thoughts.

“Bought these earlier, they’re really nice!” one shopper said.

Another said: “Very nice these are.”

And a third added: “Hell yes! Will be picking these up.”

The Cherry Bakewell tubs are among six delicious-sounding new flavours brought out by Mr Kipling.

You can also try Caramel Crispy, Millionaire’s Cake, Millionaire’s Shortcake, Double Chocolate Cake and Strawberry Bliss.

They all come in 220g tubs and are perfect for sharing.

More new sweet treats hitting shelves

Last month, Mr Kipling brought back another treat to Tesco stores.

The brand’s Festive Bakewells were back on shelves in August.

They feature an almond flavour sponge and a layer of plum and raspberry jam, and are topped with icing and sprinkles.

Chocolate lovers will be able to treat themselves to an exciting new flavour of bar from the iconic McVitie’s biscuit brand.

The new flavour of chocolate bar is available from major supermarkets for just 29p.

McVitie’s has introduced a brand new caramel flavour of their iconic Penguin biscuits.

Jaffa Cakes are another sweet-treat favourite of the iconic brand, which have also seen new flavours.

For the first time, an exotic Yuzu version of the Jaffa cake was spotted in the UK supermarkets.

How to save money on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
