My neighbour called the police over the ‘eyesore’ in my garden – she even said it was bringing her house value down

A WOMAN who spent three weeks making a centrepiece for her front garden was left stunned when the neighbours called the police on her.

Nina Dougherty had worked hard on her new garden fixture so was baffled when her neighbour complained, calling it an ‘eyesore’.

She said her new rose arch was an ‘eyesore’ and ruining the neighbourhood[/caption]

Taking to social media, she wrote: “My neighbour called the police on me for ‘destroying property value‘ with what she called ‘that eyesore contraption” in my front yard.’

“I’d spent three weekends building this raised garden bed with an arch, and I thought it looked pretty decent.”

The metal arch frame had cedar boards on the bottom which she filled with an array of colourful plants.

The arch itself was covered in climbing roses which would eventually cover the metal frame, so it’s not a surprise it would be found in her garden.

However, she was left stunned earlier this week when a police officer approached her while she watered her flowers.

She explained: “Turns out Karen from across the street had filed a formal complaint, claiming my ‘makeshift greenhouse thing’ was bringing down everyone’s property values.”

Thankfully, the officer was on Nina’s side, who told her: “Ma’am, I’m required to document the complaint, but between you and me, this looks like a beautiful garden feature.”

Nina was clearly irritated by her neighbour’s complaint and took to a local social media group to discuss it.

But she soon found out that the neighbour had done the same with other residents in the area.

“Three people in my actual neighbourhood saw my post and reached out,” she continued.

“Turns out I’m not the only one Karen has targeted with her complaints. We’re forming our own little gardening alliance now.”

Now the flowers were in full bloom, she saw her neighbour walking past, slowing down to look at the ‘eyesore’.

Nina added: “The climbing roses are already creating this gorgeous natural archway, and the whole thing just glows in the evening light.

“My property values are doing just fine, thank you very much. And my back has never been happier with waist-high gardening.”

The post, which was shared to the Facebook group, Upcycle It, went viral and many claimed her neighbour must be jealous.

One person wrote: “Tell her to get a life!”

Another commented: “I think it’s gorgeous!”

The Top Five Reasons Neighbours Squabble

One study by Compare the Market revealed the top reason British neighbour’s argue

  1. Broken fences – top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix it
  2. Parking: one of the leading drivers of neighbour disputes, with 54.1 per cent of people having issues with people parking in front of their house, parking bay or driveway
  3. Trees – complaints about a neighbour’s tree cracking your garden path was also common with nearly half of participants finding it frustrating
  4. Bin wars – outdoor bin etiquette continues to ignite the most furious debates between neighbours
  5. Nosy Neighbours – some people have their eyes and ears at the ready to have a peek causing problems for others

“The police were called for this? Don’t they have proper crime to fight?” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Neighbour is jealous.”

“Ignore the nasty neighbour, every neighbourhood seems to have one,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “I just know that her problem is jealousy.”
