Budget rail company, Lumo, will be offering a direct route between London and Glasgow.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has approved the line which will run between London’s King’s Cross and Glasgow Queen Street.
Previously, this route was only available through Avanti West Coast, often for eye-watering sums.
But Lumo, which currently runs between Edinburgh and London, is providing a far cheaper alternative for rail users.
Book in advance
You could bag tickets for a bargain £19.90 if you book far enough in advance.
According to Lumo, they will provide two northbound services and one southbound service between the two stations on weekdays.
They will also offer one service in each direction on Sundays.
The final costs and schedule for the new Glasgow route are yet to be confirmed.
Rail users can often secure the most affordable if they book their train tickets in advance so it’s important to keep an eye out for the best prices to snap them up.
Additional services
A number of additional lines have also been approved including new Lumo routes to Stirling, Newcastle and Hull.
Stephanie Tobyn, ORR’s director of strategy, policy and reform, said: “Approving these additional open access services will increase connectivity on the East Coast Main Line.
“Importantly, we have ensured the approval of these services can be accommodated alongside the major service uplifts by other operators, which have been planned into the December 2025 timetable, so together passengers and freight customers can benefit from more direct connections and greater choice from December.”
Lumo launched in October 2021 and offers a more sustainable method of transport with fully-electric trains as well as a low-cost offering to rail users.
The company have been compared to budget airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair with their most expensive tickets coming in cheaper, limits put on baggage and no first-class or buffet car.
What are Lumo trains like?
LUMO trains are fully-electric trains which were introduced back in 2021.
At the time of launch, passengers could travel from London to Edinburgh for just £19.90.
The company claimed they provided “fares that are fair”.
The trains do not have a first class option, but they do have USB sockets, tray tables and comfortable seating.
Passengers can also personalise their lighting via a button on the back of the seat in front of them.
The Sun previously reported how Lumo plan to launch a new direct train service between a central Scottish city and London as early as Spring 2026.
Lumo’s new route will link London Euston directly to Stirling, also calling at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet (serving Coatbridge), Greenfaulds (serving Cumbernauld) and Larbert.
Last year, Lumo also announced plans for a cheap train route from London to the North West.
A proposed new train service would offer journeys between London and Rochdale, with stops at Manchester.
An application has been submitted to the Office of Rail and Road and if approved, the new services could take to the rails in 2027.
If plans are approved, it would be the first time that a direct train has connected Rochdale to London for more than 25 years.
Elsewhere, a scenic 150-year-old train line is set to shut this week for major works.
The route runs for nearly 121 miles from Shrewsbury to Swansea, winding through the Welsh Marches and carrying passengers past spa towns and historic castles.
The inside of the UK’s incredible new £160million train station has also been revealed ahead of its grand opening in just a few weeks time.
The brand new station, located in Chelmsford, will be the first of its kind in 100 years.
