Blood soaked through tiles overhead at the 60-bed community hospital and splashed onto chairs in a consultation room below.
An NHS staff member’s relative reported the disturbing issue, which sparked an investigation into the facility.
The relative said: “Rats in ceilings, blood dripping from the ceiling onto the floor where patients are sitting.
“Employees are having to work in these disgusting conditions and have for some time.
“The rats can be heard moving around in the ceilings and the blood that had dropped on to the floor from one of the rooms was in a consultation room.
“It was actually spotted by a patient. Rats have been seen by members of staff near the old morgue building.”
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said it took “immediate steps” to resolve the issue.
But the health board have not stated where the blood came from or why it had been able to leak through the ceiling.
The hospital is run by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and is home to a phlebotomy service for blood tests along, a minor injuries unit, outpatient clinics, radiology, rehabilitation and mental health wards for older patients.
It comes after a separate probe found pigeons inside trauma centres in the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff.
Meanwhile staff and patients at Barry Hospital have also complained about several rat sightings.
A spokesperson for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “We are very sorry about the concerns raised regarding the condition of one of the consulting rooms at Barry Hospital.
“Pest prevention and monitoring was in place, however we have subsequently undertaken a comprehensive survey of the hospital site and further remedial action has been undertaken to resolve all of the issues raised.
“The delivery of safe, high-quality care to our patients is of paramount importance to us. This incident does not reflect the standards we strive to uphold.
“We strongly encourage any patients who have concerns during their care to speak directly with staff in the clinical area.
“Alternatively, concerns can be raised with our dedicated Concerns Team, who can provide a direct response to patients and their families.”
