PRIMARK has sparked a massive debate after a new campaign revealed how to properly say its name.

There has been arguments for years about the correct way to pronounce the name of the high-street store.

But now signs emblazoned with the correct pronunciation have reignited the conversation.

In the windows of the Primark in Braehead, Scotland, there were signs across the window which read “It’s pronounced PREE-mark”.

Other signs had crossed out the “Pri” in Primark, and replaced it with “Pree”.

“It’s Preemark Not Primark,” the Braehead store added in the caption of a TikTok video showing off the new signs.

Unsurprisingly, the comments section was immediately filled with people weighing in on the debate.

“It will always be pry-mark. Hope this helps,” one insisted.

“It’s spelt PRI so it’s Primark, you don’t say Preemary School,” another added.

“PRImark. PRI. basic English pronouncement please,” a third commented.

“It was said to be PRImark by some young buck corporate yoke,” someone else added.

“Back in the 80’s there was an ad they ran at Christmas and it was ‘Preemark gotta whole lotta things for Christmas gotta lot for the family’!!!!

“Might even be on YouTube!”

“Yeah i’m just gonna order off Amazon Preem,” another joked.

“Absolutely not… I used to work there and it was always Primark!” someone else insisted.

As another joked: “Actually it is pronounced pry-mar-nee!”

“I’m shoookkkkuth! I can’t and won’t call it that ever,” someone else raged.

However, others hit back as they insisted they’re on board with the window signs.

Primark’s history

PRIMARK first opened in 1969 as Pennies in Dublin, hoping to provide affordable fashion in Ireland.

A Primark store officially opened as Primark in 1974 in Derby.

The retailer now has 193 stores across the UK and 441 stores worldwide with a goal of running 530 stores by the end of 2026.

“Why are y’all still debating on how it’s pronounced?” one wrote.

“They literally put banners on their window shops with the right pronunciation!”

“Hell yes!!! Of course it’s PREEmark!!” another added.

“There’s archive radio adverts when it opened in the 70s for PREmark!

“‘Pree’mark – best ad on the Internet. Bravo!” a third praised.

“Preemark is how it’s pronounced properly in Scotland,” someone else said.

To which another hit back: “Will always be pronounced PR-EYE-MARK to me, and I’m Scottish!”

“I’m English and in my area it was always Pree-mark until more recently,” someone else wrote.

“I’d never heard the other way until I was in my late teens!”

“They used to sell shirts that said ‘pr eye mark’ so I don’t think the company even knows how its pronounced!” another said.
