PROSTATE cancer patients will get free gym memberships in a move by Olympian Sir Chris Hoy to boost their survival chances.
He has struck a deal between PureGym, the Institute for Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London to improve men’s health.
The six-time Olympic champion cyclist has terminal prostate cancer and wants better awareness and testing for younger men.
Under the new scheme, thousands of patients taking hormone therapy for advanced prostate cancer will be eligible for a year’s free PureGym membership.
They will also get six months’ worth of expert exercise advice from the ICR and Marsden, two of Britain’s leading cancer institutions.
Sir Chris, 49, said: “Exercise has been a fundamental part of my life and never more so than since my diagnosis.
“I find it hugely encouraging that the importance of exercise for prostate cancer is being recognised.
“This is a significant step and potentially transformative.”
PureGym said: “We are proud to be supporting Sir Chris with his vital mission.”
Prostate cancer is the most common form of the disease in men with 55,000 new cases per year in the UK and 12,000 deaths.
