But the final stage of the race was not without drama as it entered Thomas’ native Wales.

That is because the peloton was forced to stop as a herd of cows crossed a narrow road in the Brecon Beacons.

Thomas and his colleagues were forced to wait and lost time on the breakaway group, who were chasing victory in Cardiff, Thomas’ hometown.

The sixth and final stage of the Tour of Britain started outside the Geraint Thomas Velodrome in Newport.

Thomas, 39, is ranked 86th in the general classification and is 16 minutes and nine seconds off the race leader Roman Gregoire.

He never won the race but did win the points classificaiton in 2011 – his best finish at the race was sixth in 2009.

Thomas’ biggest win was the 2018 Tour de France while he also won the prestigious Paris-Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné stage races.

He is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist on the track, winning the team pursuit in 2008 and 2012.
