The comedian failed to guess the catchphrase correctly and double the money for his fellow celebrity contestants, Kathy Burke and Gok Wan.
The 59-year-old managed to get to the final round of the ITV game show, the Super Catchphrase, for a chance to win the £50,000 jackpot for his charity.
But one tricky puzzle left him completely baffled and stumbling over his words.
Could you have got it right under pressure?
The clue showed Mr Chips as an astronaut flying around Earth and then smiling at it with the Earth smiling back at him.
Bill made several incorrect guesses, from “the planet smiles on you” to “friend of the earth.”
With only 25 seconds left, Bill decided to pass.
Another catchphrase showed a clue a young boy looking in the mirror with red spots on his face, and the spots were lifting weights.
But the time ran out before he could guess it right, meaning he had only won £5,000 of the available prize.
A gutted Bill said: “Oh, I wanted to get the money for everyone. But anyway, oh well.”
Stephen told him: “Well, listen Bill, don’t beat yourself up on this.”
But did you guess it?
Host Stephen Mulhern revealed the correct answer was: “Smile and the world smiles with you.”
And the second catchphrase was: “The weak spot.”
A disappointed Bill sighed and said: “Oh yes, of course!”
He walked away with a total jackpot of £10,800 for his charity, the SOS.
Bill was gutted that he couldn’t double the money for his fellow contestants after getting stumped by the catchphrases.
Kathy confronted her friend, saying: “Oh no, Bill. You were amazing.”
Celebrity Catchphrase is available to watch on ITVX.
