Wetherspoons is slashing ALL food and drink prices to as little as £1.66 this month

WETHERSPOONS is slashing the prices of all its food and drink to as little as £1.66 this month.

The popular pub chain is giving customers a 7.5% discount for Tax Equality Day.

Wetherspoons boss Sir Tim Martin has been campaigning for a reduction in VAT for pubs for years

Punters will be able to enjoy their favourite tipple and food at a bargain price for one day only on Thursday September 18.

It means a customer spending £10 on food and drinks will instead pay £9.25.

A pint of Ruddles Best, one of cheapest beers sold across the chain will cost just £1.66, marking a 13p discount.

And those looking to tuck into a large breakfast will pay £6.87 as opposed to its typical price of £7.43.

Meanwhile, a pint of Kopparberg which typically costs £2.79, will now cost £2.58.

However, the prices in Wetherspoons pubs vary across the UK, so you may not always get the same discount.

The offer will apply across pubs in Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

In Scotland, the discount will also only apply to food and non-alcoholic drinks.

The discount will be taken off your bill automatically when you order at the till or on the app.

To find your nearest pub, you can use the locator tool on Wetherspoons’ website or app.

The discount day aims to highlight the benefit of a permanent VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.

All food and drinks in pubs across the UK is subject to 20 per cent VAT.

However, supermarkets don’t pay the tax on food, meaning they can use the savings to offer drinks at a discounted price compared to pubs.

Wetherspoons founder Sir Tim Martin has been campaigning on the issue for years, and is calling for VAT to be lowered to 12.5%.

“The biggest threat to the hospitality industry is the vast disparity in tax treatment among pubs, restaurants and supermarkets,” he said ahead of Tax Equality Day.

“Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades, because of the tax disadvantages which they have with supermarkets.

“It doesn’t make sense for the hospitality industry to subsidise supermarkets.

“A VAT cut to 12.5 per cent is needed to ensure that pubs, bars and restaurants do not continue to close, but instead thrive, invest and create new jobs.

“Customers coming to Wetherspoon’s pubs on Thursday 18 September will find the price of their food and drinks to be lower than normal.

“We call on the chancellor to create tax equality between the hospitality industry and supermarkets.”

Pubs have also been hit by hikes to employer National Insurance and minimum wage, while Labour is expected to raise business rates in its upcoming Budget which would further impact venues like Wetherspoons.

How can I save money at Wetherspoons?

PUB-GOERS love Wetherspoons for its competitive pricing and low-cost meals – but did you know there are more ways to save money?

Senior consumer reporter Olivia Marshall explains how.

Free refills – Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in

their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.
